Fred W. Berger

Fred W. Berger (born July 9, 1908 in New York City , † May 23, 2003 in Westwood , Los Angeles ) was an American film editor .

Life

After graduating from the University of Michigan , Fred W. Berger worked as a stockbroker in New York City , Detroit and from 1930 also in Los Angeles . Through the contacts of his brother-in-law Edward Mann , Berger switched to the film business in 1937 and became an assistant editor at "Walter Wanger Productions" . After joining Paramount in 1943 Berger was equal with the Western False Colors his first main responsible Editor perform. After his first major success, the western television series Hopalong Cassidy , it was mainly the two television series M * A * S * H and Dallas for which Berger received numerous nominations and awards. In addition, he and Frank P. Keller received an Oscar nomination for Best Editing for the film Four Weird Birds .

Fred E. Berger was a founding member of the American Cinema Editors , its past president, and was honored with the 1997 ACE Career Achievement Award .

On May 23, 2003, Berger died of old age in his Westwood home and was survived by his wife, brother, son Peter E. Berger and daughter, as well as four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
