Life

Thielemans studied commercial science and joined the Socialist Party of Belgium. At the beginning of the 1980s he worked as a lecturer in Germanic languages in Brussels until the Mayor of Brussels Hervé Brouhon accepted him into the city government in 1983 . In 1994 he briefly succeeded Michel Demaret as mayor, but was soon replaced by François-Xavier de Donnea himself .

From 1995 to 1999 Thielemans was a member of the regional parliament of the Brussels-Capital Region . In 2001 he took over the office of Mayor of Brussels again; he succeeded François-Xavier de Donnea in office. A major focus of his work as mayor was in the area of finance. He also initiated the Bruxelles-les-Bains / Brussel Bad project , an attraction that has been taking place every summer since 2003 and is based on the Paris-Plages project .

Thielemans gained notoriety beyond Brussels when he banned an anti-Islamic event by various right-wing organizations that wanted to demonstrate against the “Islamization of Europe” on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 . " Members and sympathizers of these organizations are generally known for their little peace-loving behavior during such events, " said Thielemans. He also feared violent reactions from the Muslim residents of the Belgian capital. The demonstration organizers included Stephen Gash from SIOE Great Britain and Udo Ulfkotte .

Ulfkotte sued the ban and was represented by the Belgian lawyer Hugo Coveliers , whom he had been mediated by the group chairman of the right-wing populist party Vlaams Belang , Philip Dewinter . The lawsuit was dismissed on August 30, 2007. The few demonstrators who defied the ban were provisionally arrested by the police. Among those arrested were leading politicians from the Vlaams Belang such as Frank Vanhecke .

In September 2008 Thielemans again banned a rally by the Vlaams Belang party and the Steden tegen islamering (“Cities against Islamization”) organization on the occasion of the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to protect public order.
