history
Theodor Egel founded the Freiburg Bach Choir as a student choir at Freiburg University in the winter semester of 1943/44 . On March 5, 1944, the choir performed Johann Sebastian Bach's St. Matthew Passion in the Freiburg Minster . For 39 years the choir was under the direction of Theodor Egel; since 1983 Hans Michael Beuerle was the director of the choir. After the death of Hans Michael Beuerle on January 15, 2015, Wolfgang Schäfer temporarily took over the leadership of the choir until a successor was appointed. In March 2016 Hannes Reich was elected as the new artistic director.
Several times a year the choir performs great works of choral literature. Concert tours have taken the choir to Switzerland, France, Italy, Great Britain, Ukraine and Japan, among others.
