The non-profit Freizeitzentrum Xanten GmbH was founded as early as February 22, 1974, sponsored by the city of Xanten , the Wesel district and the Ruhr Regional Association with the task of providing the population with a leisure center with facilities for sports and recreation. The foundation stone of the Nibelungenbad in the Xanten town of Wardt was not laid until five years later in 1979. Another three years later, the Nibelungenbad was opened and the first section of the Xanten North Sea was opened. In 1983 the rest of the North Sea was released and in 1986 the Nibelungenbad was expanded to include a lido on the South Sea. Finally, a local recreation center was created with a wide range of leisure activities from swimming and saunas to sailing , windsurfing and water skiing to diving and fishing . Round trips on the Xanten North Sea are also offered with the passenger ship Seestern .

In addition, the Nibelungen Triathlon and similar events take place in the FZX . The stage there has already served as a venue for comedians like Dieter Nuhr , Bernd Stelter , Ingo Appelt and cabaret artists like Hanns Dieter Hüsch .

The Nibelungenbad (indoor pool and wave pool) was closed in October 2008 and the FinnWELL sauna area was closed in April 2015 . However, the lido remains open for the summer. The original plan was to convert the Nibelungenbad into a Roman thermal bath, but no investor could be found for the € 20 million conversion, so these plans were discarded. The Nibelungenbad was demolished in 2017.
