About this picture
Location of Wardt in Xanten

Wardt is a district of Xanten and forms the district of Wardt with the surrounding area . The village is located on a peninsula between the Rhine in the northeast and the “ Xanten North Sea” and “South Sea” in the southwest.

history

The first settlements by Franconians can be proven as early as the 5th century through a cemetery discovered near the village under a hail cross, which is assigned to the no longer existing farm Nederwick. Today the hail cross, which was erected over the cemetery in 1618 to protect the rural population from hail and water shortage , stands on a peninsula in the “Xanten South Sea” created by pebbles . Of the three linden trees originally planted on Hagelkreuz , only two have survived since a storm on March 14, 2000.

The first settlement of today's local area can be documented by the construction of a chapel from the 10th century. From this square half-timbered building with a side length of 4 m, today's Catholic , Gothic Willibrord Church was later built. Around the year 1200, a 70 large tuff hall and a bronze bell were added to the original chapel , and the 35 m high church tower was built in the 15th century and the "Big Bell" was added in 1484. In 1413 Count Adolf II von Kleve appointed Wardt to his own parish .

During the Eighty Years' War there was a battle between Dutch and Spanish troops at Wardt on November 8, 1608 , the victims of which were buried in a mass grave under the churchyard.

In belonging to Wardt peasantry Mörmter was 1922 Monastery Mörmter built; there is also the Protestant church of the village. During the Second World War , Wardt was the target of an Allied bombing raid on the night of February 15-16 , 1941 , in which 13 residents were killed. These were buried in the churchyard and honored by a bronze memorial consisting of a cross and a wreath by the sculptor Ewald Mataré .

In the 1960s, the church was completely restored . On July 1, 1969, the previously independent community Wardt was incorporated into Xanten. In 1982 the Xanten leisure center was opened with the “Nibelungenbad” and subsequently expanded to include the Wardt harbor and a water ski facility. However, the Nibelungenbad was closed in October 2008. The FinnWELL sauna area was also closed on March 31, 2015 . The lido is still open for the summer season. A plan to convert the Nibelungenbad into a Roman thermal bath was canceled due to a lack of private investors.
