Friedhelm Frischenschlager (born October 6, 1943 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian politician (initially FPÖ , from 1993 LIF ).

Life

After studying law at the University of Vienna (Dr. iur.) From 1963 to 1969 and active in university policy in the 1960s, Frischenschlager found his way to the National Council in the 1970s through Salzburg's local politics (1977 to 1983; 1986 to 1996). During the SPÖ-FPÖ coalition under Fred Sinowatz and Norbert Steger, he held the office of Federal Minister for National Defense (1983 to 1986).

Frischenschlager caused a stir in 1985 when he greeted Nazi war criminal Walter Reder , who was in command of the Marzabotto massacre , the worst war crime by German troops in Italy , with a handshake. Frischenschlager later regretted the lack of sensitivity in this matter.

From 1986 to 1990 he held the office of chairman of the FPÖ parliamentary club . In 1993 he left the FPÖ together with Heide Schmidt and other MPs because of differences over EC policy, the protection of minorities, the integration of immigrants and the political style and founded the Liberal Forum (LIF). From 1996 to 1999 Frischenschlager was a member of the LIF to the EU Parliament ( MEP ).

From 2005 to 2007, Frischenschlager was Secretary General of the umbrella organization UEF ( Union of European Federalists ).

In November 2007 Friedhelm Frischenschlager was elected the new federal chairman of the European federalists in Austria.
