Friedrich Oetinger

Friedrich Oetinger (* 1907 in Braunschweig ; † 1986 ) was a German publisher .

Life

Oetinger was initially a bookseller and antiquarian, as he had specialized in old books. Together with his friend Heinz Kohn , he took over the management of the Heinrich Heine bookstore in Hamburg. From 1938 to 1946 he was head of the children's book division at the Heinrich Ellermann publishing house . In 1946 he founded his own publishing house, Friedrich Oetinger, a children's and youth book publisher. In 1949 the German translation of Astrid Lindgren's Pippi Longstocking appeared , which became one of the most successful children's books in the world. At Oetinger, Astrid Lindgren's complete works were published in Germany . He had a lasting influence on German children's literature by giving it a new direction through Scandinavian authors. He married his wife Heidi in 1952. After retiring from the publishing business at the end of the 1960s, she took over management.

Friedrich Oetinger died in his retirement home in Bavaria.
