Fritz Kempe (born October 22, 1909 in Greifswald , † December 27, 1988 in Hamburg ) was a German photographer .

Kempe learned the photography trade from his father Max Kempe, with whom he also passed the journeyman's examination in 1927. Two years later he opened the Foto-Kempe company in Greifswald with the chemist Gerhard Jacobs. In 1938 he passed the master's examination and founded his own studio for industrial and advertising photography in Berlin. With the beginning of the Second World War he was used as a photo reporter in a propaganda company of the Wehrmacht, including during the German-Soviet War in the area of ​​Army Group Center. This resulted in the propaganda illustrated books The Face of the German Soldier and The Fuhrer's Soldier - The Face of Our Time . From 1945 he lived in Hamburg, where he worked for a welfare organization and at the same time as an editor and writer. From 1949 to 1974 he worked as a director for the State Image Office in Hamburg . Kempe photographed the Hamburg portrait collection and its guests , founded the Hamburg collection on the history of photography in 1952 and worked in this context at the Hamburg Museum of Art and Industry . In 1982 he was awarded the title of professor.

Fritz Kempe was buried in the Ohlsdorf cemetery in Hamburg, grid square Bp 64 (east of Prökelmoorteich ).

As a teacher in the 1950s and 1960s, he played a key role in the development of photography as part of the possibilities of artistic expression in Germany. He was an honorary member of the GDL and received the David Octavius ​​Hill Medal in 1974 and the Senator Biermann Ratjen Medal in 1981 for his artistic services to the city of Hamburg.

His photographic life's work, Hamburger and their guests, includes around 1,300 portraits of personalities from cultural, political and intellectual life.
