Against the tournament favorites Brazil, the USSR led until the 75th minute, until Éder Aleixo could equalize. With two minutes to go, Sócrates decided the game in favor of the South Americans. The Soviet Union won 3-0 against the blatant outsider New Zealand. The decision for second place had to be decided by goal difference, because the Soviets and Scots parted 2-2. Here the equalizer fell for Scotland in the 86th minute but did nothing to change the progress of the Soviet Union. Thus, the smaller defeat of the Soviets against the Brazilians hit through and the men around star striker Oleg Blochin were on, while Kenny Dalglish & Co. were allowed to leave.
