Games
Preliminary round
Austria played in Group 2 against the FRG, Chile and Algeria, after two victories they already seemed qualified for the intermediate round. After their opening defeat against Algeria, Germany had to win against Austria in their last group game in order to progress. However, since Algeria had previously won 3-2 (3-0) against Chile, a 3-0 victory for Germany would have meant the end for the Austrians. The game then ended with a narrow 0: 1 (0: 1) defeat against Germany ( Gijón non-aggression pact ), and thanks to the goal difference they were second in the group. Not least because of this game, the decisive group games were scheduled at the same time from the 1984 European Championship .

Austria | - | Algeria | 2: 0 (0: 0) |

Intermediate round
In the second round, Austria met France and Northern Ireland. After a loss to France and a draw against Northern Ireland, the Austrians were eliminated.
