The 2012 G8 summit at Camp David was the 38th summit of the Group of Eight heads of government . It took place from May 18-19, 2012 under the US presidency (by President Barack Obama ) in Camp David .

It was the sixth G6, G7 or G8 summit in the United States since 1975. Previous summits have taken place in San Juan (1976, G7), Williamsburg (1983, G7), Houston (1990, G7), Denver (1997, G7) and Sea Island (2004, G8).

Two days after the end of the summit, the NATO summit took place in Chicago from May 21-22 . The G8 summit was originally supposed to take place in Chicago. However, the White House decided to physically separate the two summits.

Russian President Vladimir Putin did not attend this G8 summit , he was represented by Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev .

Meeting place

The White House originally planned to hold the summit right before the NATO summit in Chicago. On March 7, 2012, the White House announced that it had decided to physically separate the two meetings. President Obama cited possible demonstrations as the reason. Protesters have no way of getting anywhere near Camp David. The Secret Service has cordoned off possible locations for demonstrations such as parks or the like in the vicinity.

For the US President, Camp David is a place of relaxation and retreat. The facility is managed by the US Navy , as the official name of Naval Support Facility Thurmont suggests. In the past, Camp David was best known when the presidents welcomed high-ranking guests of state to formal or informal meetings. The best known is probably the Camp David Agreement brokered by President Jimmy Carter , which was the basis for the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt after the Six Day War . The Camp David site is located in a national park and is not open to the public.

European economic and financial crisis

Working meeting during the G8 summit on economic issues

In connection with the global economic situation, the economic situation in Europe and the euro debt crisis in particular were discussed. The German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her rejection of debt-financed economic stimulus programs were criticized . These had previously been discussed by American President Barack Obama and his newly elected French counterpart François Hollande . Both had spoken out in favor of a "strong growth agenda" at a meeting. Merkel reiterated her rejection by warning that credit-financed growth programs were partly responsible for the euro debt crisis, and explained that, unlike when the crisis erupted in 2008, the G-8 states no longer financed economic stimulus programs as a result of their increased debt is possible. In the debates, the heads of state and government of the G8 countries finally agreed that the different economic conditions in the countries would not allow for joint economic policy measures. The final declaration also avoided being stipulated in this controversy and named Merkel's demand for budget discipline at the same time as possible government stimulus programs. Chancellor Merkel declared at the summit: "Consolidation and growth are two sides of the same coin" and emphasized the unity between Germany and France on this issue.

Another topic at the summit was the Greek sovereign debt crisis . All G8 countries spoke out in favor of Greece remaining in the euro zone . At the same time, the heads of state and government declared the country's compliance with promises and commitments to be a prerequisite for future membership of the euro area.

other topics

Another issue was the famine in Africa.

The G8 countries have pledged further support for Afghanistan in building a democratic state, but concrete financial commitments are not expected to follow until a donor conference in July 2012. The summit participants expressed their serious concern about the Iranian nuclear program and called on Iran to provide information about its nuclear program. In view of the continuing violence in the Syrian civil war , the G8 states called on the government and insurgents in their final declaration to resolve the conflict peacefully and to support the UN observer mission .

At the G8 summit, US President Obama spoke out in favor of the industrialized countries releasing strategic oil reserves in order to prevent price increases for petroleum products from July 2012. On July 1, 2012, the EU had in connection with the nuclear program of Iran the beginning of an oil embargo announced against Iranian oil. The Iranian leadership had responded with a threat to close the Strait of Hormuz , which is important for international oil supplies . Barack Obama could not get his demand through.
