Energy policy

Working meeting of the eight heads of government

All G8 states except Germany committed to using nuclear energy. The further development of nuclear power could contribute to global energy security, to reducing air pollution and to coping with climate change. This part of the declaration was not supported by Chancellor Angela Merkel. The summit declaration on the subject of nuclear power said: "We recognize that the G8 members have taken different paths to achieve energy security and climate protection goals." On the other hand, there was agreement among the G8 countries on the other points of the declaration on energy security: The use of as many different energy sources as possible, increasing energy efficiency and protecting power plants and other infrastructure from terrorist attacks.

Israel-Lebanon crisis

Russian President and host of the G8 summit, Vladimir Putin , put the Israel-Lebanon crisis in 2006 , which broke out on July 12, 2006, on the agenda. The Middle East conflict has pushed the other issues into the background.

On July 16, the summit participants adopted a joint statement in which the attacks by Hezbollah and parts of Hamas on Israel were sharply condemned. "These extremists and those who support them must not throw the Middle East into chaos and provoke a major conflict," it said. The declaration admonishes Israel to be cautious about military actions in self-defense.

In a conversation at the G8 summit in Saint Petersburg, President Bush told British Prime Minister Tony Blair that the pressure on Syria must be increased "to make Hezbollah stop this shit" .

No agreement on Russia's entry into the WTO

At the G8 summit in Saint Petersburg, the representatives involved were unable to agree on Russia's accession to the World Trade Organization .

Protest actions

The summit took place with almost no protests worth mentioning - a success from the perspective of the Russian government. The summit policing had an effect: a sit-in on the grand boulevard Nevsky Prospect was broken up after a few minutes, and up to 34 demonstrators were arrested. The anti- globalization summit in a remote stadium was isolated by a ring of security forces. Activists had already received a visit from the police beforehand, and hundreds of them were taken into custody as a precaution.
