Gabriele Matzner-Holzer
Gabriele Matzner-Holzer (born August 10, 1945 in Kitzbühel , Austria ) is an Austrian diplomat and publicist and most recently was Austria's ambassador to the United Kingdom .
life and career
Gabriele Matzner-Holzer comes from a Carinthian family of craftsmen ( gunsmiths ). Her ancestors included painters (including her maternal grandfather, Hermann Poschinger ). As an amateur painter, she herself has appeared in solo exhibitions in Vienna , Prague , Budapest , Bratislava , Berlin and Tunis .
With a doctorate in law from the University of Vienna , she joined the Austrian Foreign Ministry in 1971 and served at the representations in Moscow , New York City ( UNO ), Washington, DC , Berlin and as ambassador in Bratislava, Tunis and until her retirement in 2010 London . In Vienna she occasionally acted as deputy head of the international law office and as deputy director of the Diplomatic Academy . From 1981 to 1983 she was a member of the cabinet of Chancellors Bruno Kreisky and Fred Sinowatz . She married Egon Matzner , with whom she has a daughter.
She is the chairwoman of the Urban Forum - Egon Matzner Institute for Urban Research and Helping Hands, on the board of the Austrian-Slovak Society and the Citizens' Forum Europe and a member of other organizations such as the Austrian Institute for International Politics .
She was on the board of associations such as the Peace University Stadtschlaining , the Theodor Kramer Society , the London Vienna Library, and the Vienna Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe .
Publications
Matzner-Holzer is the author of articles and books. In 1995 Kremayr & Scheriau published her book Verfreundete Nachbarn. Austria Germany. A relationship that was updated in 2005 at Edition Atelier . In this book the author deals with the mutual prejudices of Germans and Austrians. In January 2001 it was published by Verlag Holzhausen, Im Kreuz Europäische. The unknown Slovakia, in which it depicts the history, culture and society of this neighboring country to Austria.
In 2005 she was co-editor of the book Sisyphus als Optimist, published by VSA-Verlag and dedicated to Egon Matzner , in which internationally renowned authors dealt with current economic, social and political developments. In 2010 her book Egon Matzner was published by Czernin Verlag . Lateral thinker for another world. A political legacy in which she offers a cross-section of the political work of her husband, who died early in 2003.
In 2015, Amalthea Verlag published Danger in Suit: almost a Vienna crime thriller, a crime story that takes place in Africa and in which a young Austrian diplomat plays the leading role.
Awards
- In addition to a Portuguese and a Slovak award, Matzner-Holzer received the Great Silver Medal of Honor in 2010 for services to the Republic of Austria .
