The gaff top sail is a sail that is attached over the gaff sail on sailing ships with gaff rigging . It has a triangular or trapezoidal shape. On larger ships the sail is attached to a rod as an extension of the mast and is set with the sheet towards the gaff wing. On smaller ships, the sail is attached to a spar for this purpose and hoisted over a halyard, and looks like a steep gaff .
