Gail Emms
Gail Elizabeth Emms , MBE , (born July 23, 1977 in Hitchin , Hertfordshire , England ) is a British badminton player . She celebrated her greatest successes as a double player.
Career
Emms started badminton at the age of four. She has been a member of the UK national team since 1995. At the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002 , she won a bronze medal in women's doubles with her partner Joanne Goode . With the English national team, she won the gold medal in the mixed team competition. At the English Badminton Championships she won the title three times in mixed doubles and twice in women's doubles.
Her most successful year so far was 2004. First she was European champion in mixed doubles for the first time in her career at the European Championships in Geneva, together with her partner Nathan Robertson . With Robertson at her side, she fought her way through to the finals at the Olympic Games in Athens in mixed doubles, but lost to the Chinese doubles Zhang Jun and Gao Ling in just three sets . In the same year, the couple also won mixed at the Thailand Open .
In 2005 and 2006 she and Nathan won the mixed Swiss Open . That was the first time in the history of the tournament that a mixed pair managed to defend the title.
As of July 27, 2006 she was - together with Donna Kellogg - 4th in women's doubles and 5th in mixed with Nathan Robertson. This means she has the best non-Asian position in both disciplines.
Together with Nathan Robertson, Gail Emms became world champion in mixed on September 24, 2006 at the Individual World Championships. That year she also managed to become European champion in women's doubles together with Donna Kellogg.
At the European Championships in Herning in 2008 she won the silver medal together with Donna Kellogg and the bronze medal in mixed with Nathan Robertson.
For the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson were qualified in mixed, but not seeded. In the first round they won against the Chinese Gao Ling and Zheng Bo, who were seeded in first place, in three sets. In the quarterfinals they failed due to the later gold medalists Lee Yong-dae and Lee Hyo-jung from South Korea .
After the Olympic Games in 2008, Gail Emms ended her active career. In 2009 she was awarded the Order of the British Empire .
