History and conception

The glass funnel, a detail of the interior design

For a long time, Friedrichstrasse was marked by war damage . In the 1980s, the GDR leadership had the goal of transforming Friedrichstrasse into a splendid socialist boulevard. The construction management for special projects of the capital Berlin under the leadership of Erhardt Gißke was commissioned with the implementation. In 1980 Gißke went to Paris with his staff and inspected Ricardo Bofill's buildings . This construction method was to serve as a model for the design of the Friedrichstadt-Passage . With the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, construction work was discontinued. The Treuhandanstalt divided the Friedrichstadt-Passage property into three parts. The Quartier 205 and Quartier 206 buildings were realized on the other two parts of the Friedrichstadt-Passagen .

In the northern block of Friedrichstadt-Passagen, on the corner of Französische Strasse , the Galeries Lafayette Berlin was built , designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel . A vertical garden by the Parisian botanist and horticultural artist Patrick Blanc grows on the facade . The building has a glass facade. This was only possible because the property had already been sold in 1991 and the design specifications by Hans Stimmann had not yet come into force. In addition to the Akademie der Künste on Pariser Platz, it was possible to build the only fully glazed new building in downtown Berlin .

The Allianz Real Estate took over the property in 2012 from a Luxembourg investment company.

On February 29, 1996, Galeries Lafayette was one of the first companies to open a department store in the former eastern part of Berlin after German reunification .

On a sales area of 8000 m², high-end goods are offered on five floors.

The house offers international fashion for women, men and children, accessories, shoes and a care spa for men only on four floors .

The Lafayette Gourmet , located in the basement, is a gourmet department that mainly offers French delicacies. There is also a table culture department (arts de la table) and a French bookshop.

Another concept is the LABOmode on the second floor in cooperation with the ESMOD Berlin fashion school . Here, young Berliners and international up-and-coming designers have the opportunity to present and sell their creations in close proximity to international designer brands.

In the Galeries Lafayette, events such as fashion shows take place regularly, mostly for invited guests, but sometimes also in public.
