biography

background

In his childhood and youth, Emery took piano lessons and listened to jazz , sometimes a little punk rock . He developed into one of the most important trance DJs. Since it landed 34th in the DJ Mag Top 100 poll in 2006 , it has increased every year. He was 31st in 2007 and 23rd in 2008. He is considered one of the new global stars of the trance music genre worldwide. Both Paul van Dyk and Ferry Corsten named him as the future star in the DJ Mag Top 100 interviews in both 2006 and 2007. In 2009 Gareth Emery landed in the top 10 of the DJ Mag Top 100 for the first time and was ranked 9th. In 2010 he released the single Too Dark Tonight on his album Northern Lights with his sister Roxanne Emery .

The breakthrough in 2002/2003

Emery first received a lot of attention in 2002 when his remix of The Shrink 's Nervous Breakdown was played live on BBC's Radio 1 at the Mardi Gras Festival in Judge Jules ' screening. After some DJs, including Eddie Halliwell, Pete Tong , Guy Ornadel, Scot Project and Dave Pearce, played the track, the song was released by Nutrition and was later featured on the Godskitchen Direct Mix album . This was followed by a hard-tech trance remix of Nervous Breakdown before releasing Psiclone and Flood Control on a record on his own label Influential . His big breakthrough came as GTR with his fourth title Mistral . He produced it within two weeks while on holiday in Provence ( France ) on his laptop . The title sparked a storm of excitement when it was first played by Paul van Dyk at the Nature One Festival . Some of the most important DJs picked up this title, including Tiësto , Armin van Buuren and Ferry Corsten, and it received positive reviews in Mixmag , Muzik and DJ .

The continuation of his music career (2004 to 2006)

From 2004 to 2006 Emery tried to establish himself in the music business. He worked for a long time for the label Five AM , of which he was co-owner, and also established himself as a DJ by performing in British nightclubs such as Godskitchen , Slinky and Ministry of Sound .

Global success (since 2006)

Emery gained global fame in 2006, including through his own radio show, The Gareth Emery Podcast , which launched in March 2006, and was finally successful when he got back into the studio. He trumped the success of GTR - Mistral with the release of his remix of Albert Vornes Formentera What and entitled Another You, Another Me with his friend DJ Lange. Since then he has released numerous successful tracks and remixes such as More Than Anything , This Is That and his biggest hit Exposure (2009). He has established himself as a globally successful DJ and producer, now under his new Garuda label .

Gareth Emery lives in Manchester, England.

style

Emery is a typical representative of the trance genre with a special focus on uplifting , progressive and vocal trance . There are also elements of Balearic and Tech Trance . His productions are described as intelligent, driving, melodic and progressive. He is known for playing different styles of music in his mixes and podcasts . Emery rejects a categorization as a trance DJ because, according to his own statement, he plays titles that he likes and does not pay attention to the genre of music these titles have.

Labels

From 2003 to 2008 Gareth Emery was associated with the (now defunct) label Five AM, on which some of his greatest hits were released ( Mistral / This is That / More Than Anything ) and of which he was co-owner. At the end of 2008 he announced that he would be leaving Five AM and instead found his own label Garuda . Garuda's first release was his own title, Exposure / Metropolis, in May 2009. The title was very successful and topped the download charts for over a month from sites like Beatport or Audiojelly.

Garuda

Garuda is Emery's new label, on which all new titles he produces are released. It is named after the mythological Indonesian bird Garuda , which Emery met on a tour in Indonesia. His label is also involved in events at the Sankey nightclub (in Manchester), where Gareth Emery and a guest usually play. Previous guests have included Ferry Corsten and Above & Beyond.

Podcast

Gareth Emery produces the Gareth Emery Podcast , which is between 60 and 120 minutes long and appears every two weeks on Thursdays. The podcast was nominated for "Best Podcast" at the Miami Winter Music Conference and is considered one of the first and most popular dance music podcasts on the Internet.
