Sir Garfield St Aubrun Sobers , AO (born July 28, 1936 in Bridgetown , Barbados ) is a former Barbados cricketer who played for the West Indies team.

Garfield Sobers is considered the best all-rounder in the history of cricket. In 2000 he was voted one of the five best cricketers of the 20th century by a jury of the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack with 90 out of 100 possible points.

Career

Garfield Sobers played a total of 93 encounters in test cricket . In these 93 encounters he scored a total of 8032 runs (57.78 runs per wicket). As a bowler , he scored 235 wickets (34.03 runs per wicket) in his 93 test encounters . He made his debut in a test cricket match at the age of 17 in March 1954 against England in Kingston , Jamaica . His last encounter in test cricket was in April 1974 in Port of Spain , Trinidad and Tobago , also against the English team. He was the captain of the West Indies cricket team in 39 Tests. He held the record for the most runs scored in a Test innings for 37 years . This record (365 runs), which was later broken by Brian Lara , he set against Pakistan in 1958. Sobers played at club level for the English first-class County Nottinghamshire . Here he was the first player ever in a first-class cricket match to hit the ball six times over the edge of the field in an over (i.e. to score six times six points).

Others

In 1972 Sobers was awarded the Trinity Cross , the highest honor in Trinidad and Tobago at the time. He was honored for his services to cricket sport in 1975 by Queen Elizabeth II. To Knight Bachelor beaten. The International Cricket Council has been awarding the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for the best player of the year since 2004. Garfield Sobers was not only active as a cricketer. He also played football and basketball for the Barbados national team. Garfield Sobers was married to the Australian Pru Kirby from 1969 to 1990. From this marriage he has two children. Since 1980, Sobers has not only been citizens of his home country but also has Australian citizenship.
