Gasland is an American documentary from 2010 about the effects of fracking , a deep drilling technique used to develop natural gas reserves . It was written and directed by filmmaker Josh Fox .

Fox traveled through several affected regions of the United States. The film presents statements and experiences of the residents affected by the negative effects and lets numerous experts have their say.

In 2011 the film received an Oscar nomination for “Best Documentary”, an Emmy and other awards. There were also critical voices: he was accused of tendentious presentation and errors of content.

content

In May 2008, Josh Fox was offered a written offer of US $ 100,000 (approx. 83,752 euros or 90,235 CHF ). A company wanted to pay him this amount in order to lease his land and develop gas deposits there using a method known internationally as hydraulic fracturing . He then went to four states ( Pennsylvania , New York , Ohio and West Virginia ) to find out what consequences it might have for him to accept this offer. During this trip he was invited to apartments in which the families living there could light their tap water.

Assuming this was related to hydraulic fracturing, Fox traveled to four other states ( Colorado , Wyoming , Utah, and Texas ) and visited areas that have had hydraulic fracturing gas for at least a decade. There, too, he spoke to local residents and researched abnormalities. After speaking with scientists, politicians and representatives of the industry as part of the documentary, he was informed that the subject of his still unfinished film was now officially discussed in Congress.

production

The creation of the film took 18 months, in which a total of 200 hours of footage was created. Josh Fox initially had only one helper, but the production team grew over time. Editor Matt Sanchez joined in for the film editing .

reception

positive

Robert Koehler from Variety magazine called the documentary "one of the most effective and expressive environmental films of recent years". The film "could be the dangers of natural gas production, which Silent Spring for DDT was" ( "gas country may become to the dangers of natural gas drilling what Silent Spring what to DDT").

Stewart Nusbaumer wrote in the Huffington Post that the film could upset viewers and turn them into activists. (" Gasland ... just might take you from outrage right into the fire of action.")

Australian film critic Julie Riggs called the documentary a " horror film " and a "wake-up call". ("A horror film, and a wake-up call.")

negative

The Oil & Gas Conservation Commission of the US state of Colorado complained that the filmmaker had made several mistakes in depicting events in Colorado. A direct causal connection between the environmental damage shown in the film and fracking is questioned or even disputed.

In an article in Forbes magazine , Michael Economides, a former technology professor at the University of Houston who worked in the oil industry and a member of the climate-change-denying Heartland Institute , commented on the burning taps. The presentation is extremely misleading. Hundreds to thousands of meters of allegedly impermeable rock lay between the drinking water layers and the gas-bearing layers. Any exchange between the layers therefore takes place, if at all, in geological time periods over millions of years.

Criticism also came from Energy in Depth (EID), a campaign organization founded by the Independent Petroleum Association of America's oil lobby group and financed by at least 14 oil companies, which campaigns against environmental protection regulations, especially fracking, and repeatedly attacks scientists critical of the industry. The organization published a list, according to which the film contained factual inaccuracies, and based on it produced its own film called TruthLand . The makers of Gasland responded with a reply.

Documentary filmmaker Phelim McAleer confronted Gasland director Josh Fox at an event in Chicago about historical records of flammable natural gas in tap water in Burning Springs long before fracking began there. Fox replied that this information did not appear in Gasland because it did not seem relevant to him. After the video of the confrontation was published, Fox and its lawyers obtained a deletion of the video on YouTube and Vimeo . However, the frack nation makers successfully sued for reinstatement. All of this inspired McAleer to make the documentary FrackNation , which questions Fox's motives and credibility.

effect

After the publication of the documentation, there was increased resistance in Europe to planned deep drilling.

On November 17, 2014, the FAZ reported on one-sided reporting and disinformation on the Internet using the example of fracking and gas land .
