The company was founded in Budapest in 1901 by Gedeon Richter , a Jewish pharmacist. The establishment of his company marked the beginning of the development of the Hungarian pharmaceutical industry. Gedeon Richter AG is a BUX-Index listed company on the Budapest Stock Exchange . It had a market capitalization of about $ 4 billion as of November 2015 and is the third largest company in the BUX. It is also traded on Euronext , a "multi-country exchange" that operates stock exchanges in Amsterdam, Brussels, Lisbon and Paris.

Initially, a small pharmaceutical production took place in the Hungarian Arany Sas ('Golden Eagle') pharmacy , which still exists today. Independent pharmaceutical research and production activities were then introduced in Hungary. However, industrial-scale pharmaceutical production required significant investments and large-scale pharmaceutical capital-intensive manufacturing facilities. Initially, the laboratory that operated on the pharmacy's premises processed extracts from animal organs and produced organotherapeutic agents.

In 1907 a large production facility was built in Kőbánya , a suburb of Budapest. In line with international trends in the pharmaceutical industry, the company produced herbal medicines, processed plant extracts and later synthetic products. The company became a well-known manufacturer of lecithin products, antiseptic and antipyretic products as well as analgesics hydrogen peroxide (Hyperol), acetylsalicylic acid (kalmopyrin) and tonogen, which are still produced today. After the war, the factory was rebuilt under the name of Kőbányai Gyógyszerárugyár { Kőbányai Pharmaceutical Factory } in Kőbánya. With the beginning of the planned economy era in 1948, the company was nationalized. After the Iron Curtain was opened in 1989, the company was privatized again under the name Gedeon Richter Pharmaceutical Factory and has been traded on the stock exchange since 1994. The greatest success at that time was based on the production of vitamin B12 . This preparation made the company an important player in the world market. It was the leading supplier in the Soviet Union in the 1960s.

In 1934 Konstantin Janssen (later: Janssen Pharmaceutica ) acquired the distribution rights for Gedeon Richter products.

In the second half of the 20th century the company expanded its activities. Thanks to its decades of experience in pharmaceutical production, it was able to expand its product range with the herbal product line Richtofit and a cosmetics line under the brand name Fabulon. In 1966, the company's first own oral contraceptive, Infecundin, was launched. Cavinton, the first drug to improve blood circulation in the brain, came on the market in 1977.

In June 2016, Gedeon Richter acquired one hundred percent of the Swiss pharmaceutical company Finox .
