Geeta Dutt , ( Bengali : গীতা দত্ত , Gītā Datta , born November 23, 1930 in the Faridpur district , today Bangladesh ; † July 20, 1972 ) was an Indian playback singer of Bollywood cinema . Without direct vocal training, she created a lively atmosphere full of emotions in her songs.

Life

Dutt was born as Geeta Ghosh Roy Chowdhuri into a landowning family ( Zamindar ). At the age of 12, she came to Mumbai with her parents . In 1946 she sang for a film for the first time. In the following year she got a permanent contract and by 1950 she was the most successful playback singer for melancholy-sad songs. She recorded 12 songs for Jogan (1950).

In 1951 she met the director of this film, Guru Dutt , while recording the song Tadbir Se Bigdi Hui Taqdeer for the film Baazi . In 1953 the two married. From then on she preferred to sing in her husband's films. After Guru Dutt had an affair with the new star of his films Waheeda Rehman , the marriage broke up and Geeta Dutt sought solace in alcohol. Guru Dutt died of a sleeping pill overdose in 1964 . Geeta Dutt's position as singer was taken over by Asha Bhosle , Lata Mangeshkar's sister . Dutt's later attempts to continue her career failed. One last success was her songs in Anubhav (1972).

Geeta Dutt has been involved in 150 films. She died of cirrhosis of the liver in 1972 .
