Georg Arfmann

Georg Arfmann (born June 20, 1927 in Bremen ; † August 9, 2015 in Königslutter ) was a German sculptor .

Life

Georg Arfmann designed with clay and modeling clay at an early age, as evidenced by a small animal sculpture of the twelve year old boy. His talent was promoted and discovered by his grandfather, a blacksmith.

Arfmann began an apprenticeship as a stonemason and sculptor in 1944 , which he had to interrupt when he was drafted into the Reich Labor Service . He completed his craft training in 1946 with the grade very good . His journeyman's piece was a lion, which he modeled at Ernst Gorsemann .

From 1946 to 1950 he studied sculpture at the "State Art School", today the Bremen University of the Arts , from which he graduated with honors as a graduate sculptor. He then started working as a freelance sculptor. In 1972 he began to teach as a specialist teacher at the stone mason and sculpture school in Königslutter. In 1984 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.

One focus of Arfmann's work was the reconstruction and restoration of buildings and facades. He carried out such work in Bremen, Hanover , Hildesheim , Norden and Braunschweig, among others . In addition, he created works for public and private clients and successfully participated in tenders for art in construction. His own works mostly depict animals or people in bronze or stone. He also made more stylized and abstract works. All of his work lies in the area of ​​tension between sculpture and handicraft.
