Edwin Georg "Edy" Dengel (born February 4, 1901 in Wiesbaden ; † September 28, 1987 there ) was a German film pioneer.

life and work

With his production company Axa film-Werke GmbH (Wiesbaden) he produced, among other things as a 35mm silent film created feature films The Castle of Secrets (1919), The Man with a death mask (1920), Patsy married young (1925) and the now -lost Repps and Webbs (1925). Dengel also produced documentaries such as Idstein im Taunus (1925) and Der Rhein in Eisfesseln (1929), which is the rare natural spectacle of a frozen Rhine in front of Biebrich Castleshows. In addition to his work as a screenwriter, director and producer, he appeared in several of his films as an actor, including several times in the role of the private detective "Fred Repps".

He showed his films in a cinema in Wiesbaden-Biebrich that he operated himself . The screening of the silent film Repps and Webbs , which, among other things, deals with the “kidnapping of girls”, was prohibited by the film inspection agency in November 1925 because the film had a “demoralizing effect”. Two assessors appealed against the decision. The film inspectorate reversed the decision three days later, but did not allow it to be shown in front of young people.

During the Nazi era, Dengel was banned from running his production company. Since he refused military service under Hitler , he was temporarily on the run during the Second World War . In the post-war period Dengel traded in industrial machines, hardware and motors. He died with his family at the age of 86.

A grandson of Dengel is the visual artist Robert Georg Achtel (* 1980) , who also lives in Wiesbaden .

Historical meaning

The historical significance of his work is dealt with in the book Hollywood am Kochbrunnen (1995), the silent film Das Schloss des Schreckens (1919) is therefore considered to be the origin of Wiesbaden's history as a film city, and brought Edy Dengel the reputation of "James Bond of the 20s " a. On the initiative of Harald Schleicher (Academy of Fine Arts, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz ), Uwe Schriefer and Meinhold Schmitz, the film was reconstructed in 1987 by Taunusfilm in cooperation with the Mettman trick studios (copy on 35mm security film ) and has since been several times by Uwe Schriefer demonstrated.

A special feature of Dengel's work was the skillful use of his hometown Wiesbaden-Biebrich as a backdrop to suggest an action in New York to the audience . This is what the documentary "The Rhine as Hudson , the Bachgass as Bowery " broadcast on ARD in 1987 deals with - the world of the film pioneer Edy Dengel by Harald Schleicher.
