Georg Gehring (born November 14, 1903 in Frankenthal ; † October 31, 1943 in Stettin ) was a German wrestler from Ludwigshafen am Rhein , who achieved his successes in the Greco-Roman style.

Career

He was of a sporty, athletic build, weighed about 105 kg and was also a good athlete and weightlifter . His international success began in 1921 when he won the European Youth Championship. These successes continued with ups and downs until 1941. He fought all the world class wrestlers of the time and was able to defeat most of them at least once. His fights against the Swedes Carl Westergren and Rudolf Svensson , against the Finn Hjalmar Nyström and against Kurt Hornfischer , Nuremberg and Willi Müller ( Cologne ) wrote wrestling history.

In 1932 Georg Gehring had it in his hands to become Olympic heavyweight champion, Greco-Roman style, in Los Angeles . In one of the preliminary rounds he had there defeated the Swede Carl Westergren, who was considered his toughest rival, on points. In his next fight he lost completely surprisingly against the Czech Josef Urban , whom he had already defeated on several occasions, and thus slipped to the ungrateful 4th place. At the opening ceremony of the games he was the flag bearer of the German team.

From 1933 he was in the shadow of Kurt Hornfischer from Nuremberg in Germany. In 1936, however, he managed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Berlin in the Greco-Roman style. Since the three-time European champion Hornfischer was expected to have greater profit prospects in this style, Georg Gehring had to compete in Berlin in the free style, which was not so good for him, and only came in 7th place in this style.

Georg Gehring was eleven victorious for the German team in eleven international matches. He died in Szczecin in 1943 at the age of only 39.
