Georg Gothein

Georg Gothein (born August 15, 1857 in Neumarkt in Silesia , † March 22, 1940 in Berlin ) was a German politician ( FrVg , FVP , DDP ).

Life

Georg Gothein, who was of Jewish origin and Protestant faith, attended the Realgymnasium am Zwinger in Breslau . From 1877 to 1884 he studied history at the University of Breslau and metallurgy at the Bergakademie Berlin . After working as a mountain consultant and mountain assessor, he was secretary general of the Upper Silesian Mining and Metallurgy Association from 1885 to 1887 . In 1888 he became a Dr.-Ing. PhD. Then he was head of the mountain district Waldenburg and Tarnowitz until 1892 , where he was promoted to the royal mountain ridge in 1891. From 1893 to 1901 he was the first syndic of the Wroclaw Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Silesian Provincial Association for Inland Shipping . After the First World War , Gothein worked as an author for the Berliner Tageblatt and the Neue Freie Presse . In 1921 he became chairman of the Association for Defense against Anti-Semitism . In the mid-1920s he was President of the German Group at the Central European Business Conference . When Tilo von Wilmowsky was supposed to transfer the association to the Central European Business Day in 1928 , he renounced the honorary presidency because he did not want to belong to an association that had been handed over to the Nazis.

Gothein had been married since 1886 and had three daughters. His brother Eberhard Gothein, who was four years his senior, was a historian and economist; from 1919 to 1921 he was a DDP member in the state parliament of the Republic of Baden .

Georg Gothein's grave is located in the south-west cemetery in Stahnsdorf .

Political party

Gothein initially belonged to the Liberal Association , which in 1910 merged with other left-liberal groups to form the Progressive People's Party . In 1918 he was one of the founders of the DDP .

Gothein represented a consistently liberal democratic policy and took a committed stand against militarism and anti-Semitism.

From 1889 to 1892 he was a member of the city ​​council in Waldenburg . After moving to Breslau , he was elected to the city council in 1894 (until 1902).

From 1893 to 1903 he was a member of the state parliament in Prussia . He was a member of the Provincial Parliament of Upper Silesia from 1902 to 1909. In a by-election in 1901 he was elected to the Reichstag of the Empire for the constituency of Greifswald . He was able to win this mandate again and again until 1918. In the Reichstag he fought against the emperor's naval policy , which he considered endangering peace. In 1919/20 he was a member of the Weimar National Assembly . Then he was again a member of the Reichstag until 1924 .
