Georg Hofmann (Byzantinist)

Georg Hofmann SJ (born November 1, 1885 in Friesen near Bamberg, † August 9, 1956 in Rome ) was a German theologian and Byzantinist .

Hoffmann studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and was ordained a priest on October 28, 1912 . On September 29, 1918, he joined the Society of Jesus ( Jesuits ). After completing a dissertation on Petrus Rauch (1494–1558) with Walter Otto and completing his doctorate in Munich in 1922, he taught at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome, which had just been assigned to the Jesuits .

In his publications, Hofmann mainly dealt with the Greek patriarchs of Constantinople , especially their relations with the Vatican after 1453.
