The Pontifical Oriental Institute ( Italian : Pontificio Istituto Orientale , Latin : Pontificium Institutum Orientalium Studiorum ; PIO ) is a Catholic university of canon law in Rome and consists of the faculties of Eastern Canon Law and Studies on the Eastern Church .
history
In 1917 Pope Benedict XV founded the Center for Studies on the Eastern Churches. The tasks that he set out on October 15, 1917 with the Apostolic Letter Orientis catholici ( Ecclesiae Orientales ) lie in the study and understanding of the Eastern tradition and in the enrichment and deepening of the Western tradition .
The Library on Christianity in the East was opened on November 14, 1929, and today, with 180,000 volumes, is the largest of its kind in the world. The library contains specialized literature on church history , theology , patristics , spirituality , hagiography , liturgy , canon law and sacred art as well as ecumenism from the Byzantine-Slavic world, the Balkans, the Near and Middle East.
University
The subjects of the studies are the East Syrian "Church of the East" , the Oriental Orthodox Churches , the Byzantine Orthodox Churches and all Eastern Catholic Churches . The geographic focus of the studies is in the Middle East , Eastern Europe , Egypt , Ethiopia , Eritrea and southern India . The Jesuit order has the scientific management .
Since it was founded, around 6,000 students have studied at the Oriental Institute and over 500 students have completed their doctorates . In the annual international conferences and assemblies, all important and current topics, e.g. B. the diplomatic ties between the Vatican and the Eastern European churches, discussed by high-ranking scholars.
The institute publishes the “Orientalia Christiana Analecta” and the “Orientalia Christiana Periodica” as well as the “Canonicals” and the “Anaphorae Orientalis”, as well as the “Edizioni Orientalia Christiana”.
Faculty of Studies in the Eastern Church
About two-thirds of all enrolled students are enrolled in the Faculty of Eastern Church Studies. You are studying theology , liturgy and history . The highest degree is the academic degree of a canonical doctor .
Faculty of Eastern Canon Law
The remaining students study in the Faculty of Eastern Canon Law. This faculty is the only one of its kind in the world. The canon law of the Eastern Church and its historical development are part of the course. Furthermore, the subjects of theology and practical application of canon law in the Eastern churches are part of the course content. The courses end with a state examination or a doctorate in canon law.
Student body
The number of students varies between 300 and 400 annually. They come from almost 40 countries around the world. The vast majority are seminary students , deacons , priests and members of the order. The largest national group are the Ukrainians , followed by Kerala (state in southern India). There are also students from non-Christian religions .
A first degree is required; Degrees are possible as licentiate and doctorate.
