George Howard Lambert Junior (born September 1, 1928 in Hampton , Iowa , † January 30, 2012 in River Falls , Wisconsin ) was an American pentathlete and fencer .

Life

Lambert graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1951 and received a degree in clinical psychology from the University of Paris two years later . He also studied Japanese studies in Paris . After graduating, he joined the US Army and served in Korea and Japan through November 1955 . During his time in the army he began with the modern pentathlon and was also active as a fencer. In 1959 he was part of the US sword team at the World Fencing Championships in Budapest .

Lambert took in 1956 at the Olympic Games in Melbourne , and in 1960 at the Games in Rome in part, in each case in the modern pentathlon. In Melbourne, he finished fifth in the individual competition. In the team competition, to which William Andre and Jack Daniels also contributed in addition to Lambert , he won silver behind the Soviet Union. At the games in Rome it was only enough for an 18th place in the individual, but with a third place in the team classification he secured another medal. In addition to Lambert and Jack Daniels, Robert Beck was part of the team this time .

At the world championships in 1959 he achieved his only podium finish with the bronze medal in the team competition.

After his career as an athlete, Lambert worked as a translator for French and Japanese at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in the same capacity for ten years at Lyonnaise des Eaux , a company in Paris. He retired in River Falls , Wisconsin , where he died on January 30, 2012.
