Georgios Kourmoulis

Georgios Ioannis Kourmoulis ( Greek Γεώργιος Ιωάννης Κουρμούλης , * 1907 in Sellia , Agios Vasilios , Crete ; † May 24, 1977 in Athens ) was a Greek linguist , lexicographer and neo-Greekist .

Life

Kourmoulis graduated from school in Rethymno in 1924 and then studied philology at the University of Athens . In 1931 he became associate editor, in 1946 ordinary editor at the Historical Dictionary of the Academy of Athens . In the meantime he had received his doctorate in Athens in 1937 with a dissertation Περί του ετύμου της λέξεως Χαννιά . He then completed postgraduate studies in comparative and historical linguistics. In 1945 he was appointed university lecturer in Athens, and in 1949 he was appointed full professor of linguistics. In the academic year 1963 to 1964 he was elected Prytanis (Rector) and from 1969 to 1977 he chaired the Φιλεκπαιδευτική Εταιρεία. For a short time he was from December 31, 1963 to February 19, 1964 Minister of Education in the interim government of Ioannis Paraskevopoulos .

One of his students was Georgios Babiniotis .

Kourmoulis is best known for his declining dictionary of the modern Greek language .
