Gerónimo Arnedo Álvarez
Gerónimo Arnedo Álvarez (born October 14, 1897 in San Nicolás , today part of Buenos Aires ; † June 12, 1980 ) was an Argentine politician . He was General Secretary of the Communist Party of Argentina from 1938 until his death .
Life
Arnedo Álvarez came from a working class family and worked from 1913 to 1933 as a farm and port worker in the Buenos Aires region. In 1925 he joined the Communist Party of Argentina.
From 1930 he was party and trade union functionary in Avellaneda , a port city at the gates of Buenos Aires. In 1933 he was elected to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Argentina. A short time later sent to Moscow , where he attended the International Lenin School . After finishing school, Arnedo Álvarez helped build the Moscow Metro . In 1935 he returned to Buenos Aires. From 1935 to 1937 he was chairman of the party organization of the Province of Buenos Aires . In June 1938 Arnedo Álvarez was elected to the Executive Committee and General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Argentina.
Between 1930 and 1931 and February 1943 he was imprisoned for his communist activities.
Arnedo Álvarez was the author of numerous books and writings on Argentine society and the labor movement.
