Geraldine Leigh Chaplin (born July 31, 1944 in Santa Monica , California ) is an American - British actress .

Life

Geraldine Chaplin was born in 1944 as the first child of the marriage of Charlie Chaplin and his fourth wife, Oona O'Neill . Her maternal grandfather is the US Nobel Prize for Literature, Eugene O'Neill . She first appeared in her father's movie, Spotlight , when she was eight . She was brought up in a Swiss boarding school near Lake Geneva . Originally she wanted to become a ballerina and completed a ballet training in London , but gave up this career dream and became an actress.

Her first major role was given to her by David Lean , who had seen her on the cover of a magazine and who entrusted her with the role of Doctor Zhivago's wife Tonya. The role earned her in 1966 a nomination for a Golden Globe Award for Best New Actress . In the biographical work about her father, Chaplin , she played her own grandmother, Hannah Chaplin . In addition to appearances in films by Carlos Saura ( Anna and the Wolves , Breeding Raven ), Robert Altman , Pedro Almodóvar and others, she also took on roles in international television productions such as The Crown .

In 1982 Geraldine Chaplin was a member of the jury for the Cannes Film Festival .

She had a long-term private and professional relationship with the Spanish director Carlos Saura : She played the leading female role in nine of his films; the relationship comes from the son Shane (* 1974). Geraldine Chaplin has been married to her long-time partner, the Chilean cameraman Patricio Castilla, since 2006 ; the connection has a daughter, actress Oona Castilla Chaplin (* 1986). In the Italian horror film Imago Mortis , released in 2009 , the two first appeared together in front of the camera.

In 2011 Geraldine Chaplin was the jury president of the Moscow Film Festival .
