occupation

Mama turns 100 is a 1978 Spanish drama with satirical undertones by Carlos Saura . Geraldine Chaplin , Amparo Muñoz , Fernando Fernán Gómez and Rafaela Aparicio play the leading roles in the title role.

action

To celebrate mom's 100th birthday, an extended Spanish family meets in the family's own country house. Ana, who is married to Antonio, also arrives. Ana had worked here as a nanny many years ago. Behind the facade of general trust and politeness, bitter realities simmer, because many things have changed here with the family members: José died three years ago, Juan left his wife Luchi, and only the kite-enthusiastic Fernando still lives with his elderly mother. The little girls Ana once had to take care of have long outgrown their infancy.

As an observer, Ana has to discover that this family has long since disintegrated and the abandoned Luchi has embezzled the money of the plump and barely able to move matriarch. When her ex Juan arrives for the jubilee celebration, the deepest abysses among the family members finally come to light: Together with Fernando and Luchi, he plans nothing less than to kill the long-lived old woman in order to finally get hold of the inheritance. And Ana, the observer and former governess, soon becomes a victim: Her husband Antonio begins a love affair with Natalia, another family member.

Reviews

Carlos Aguilar recalled that this film was returning to the world of Anna and the Wolves , but this time had chosen “a tragicomic perspective”.

In the lexicon of international films it says: "Saura reflects the current process of change in Spain's state and society in a kind of continuation of his film Anna and the Wolves", which is satirical in color, but shows a relaxed, almost loving affection for its subject of the usual symbolisms a comparatively accessible film by the Spaniard.
