The printer's Gerard Leeu

Gerard Leeu (also Gheraert or Geeraert Leeu ; * between 1445 and 1450 in Gouda ; † 1492 in Antwerp ) was one of the most successful and influential Dutch book printers of the incunable period .

Live and act

Leeu printed his first book, a liturgical work, in Gouda in 1477, where he ran an office and published a total of 69 prints by 1484. In 1484 he moved his workshop to Antwerp, where he died in 1492 as a result of a stab wound.

Leeu printed vernacular and Latin works; some of the latter were also published as Dutch translations. Prints for the English market are verified. He provided all of his books with woodcut illustrations . His prints were sold across national borders, especially after 1480, and reprinted in many places in northern Europe, including their illustrations.
