Gil Amelio
Gilbert Frank Amelio (born March 1, 1943 in New York City ) is an American physicist and manager .
Amelio studied physics and received her PhD from the Georgia Institute of Technology . He has been an IEEE Fellow since 1978 . In 1991 he received the IEEE Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award for his contribution to the development of CCD sensors .
He was Chief Executive Officer of National Semiconductor from 1991 to 1996 and then CEO of Apple as successor to Michael Spindler . There he was replaced in 1997 by Steve Jobs .
