Giorgio Calcaterra (born February 11, 1972 in Rome , Italy ) is an Italian long-distance and ultra-marathon runner .

Life

Giorgio Calcaterra is a three-time world and European champion in the 100 km road race and thus one of the most successful athletes over this distance. He ran his first marathon at the age of 18 in 1990 in Rome with a time of 3:29 hours. In 2000 he ran 20 marathons under 2:20 h, setting a world record. Since September 1998 he has won around 40 of more than 150 marathons, including the Luxor Marathon ( EGY ) outside Italy in 2002 , the Helsinki Marathon ( FIN ) in 2003 and the Utrecht Marathon ( NLD ) in 2005 . Giorgio Calcaterra, known for his frequent competitions, lives in Rome and is a taxi driver by profession. Several times he represented the Italian national team at world and European championships.

2008 turned Michele Cinque, Lorenzo Guarnieri and Alessandro Leonardi the documentary "Top Runner" about Giorgio Calcaterras way from his childhood to winning the IAU 100 km World Championships 2008 of Tuscania to Tarquinia that far from his hometown of Rome in the region Tuscia held were.

Giorgio Calcaterra recently also became known outside Italy through his participation in the Wings for Life World Run , in which he won the Italian championship three times in a row (2014/2015 Verona ; 2016 Milan ) . At the third edition of this charity run in Milan, with a new global record of 88.44 km, he not only won the national ranking but also the global ranking. In 2017, again in Milan, he achieved second place in the national and fourth place in the global ranking.
