Giorgos Savvidis

Giorgos Panu Savvidis , Greek Γιώργος Πάνου Σαββίδης , alias GP Savvidis , also George Savvidis (born March 11, 1929 in Athens ; † June 11, 1995 in Longos ) was a Greek neo-Greekist and George Seferis Professor of Modern Greek Studies at Harvard University .

Life

Savvidis studied at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Athens , at King's College (Cambridge) and at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki , where he wrote his dissertation Oι Kαβαφικές Eκδόσεις (1891–1932) (German: The Kavafis Editions (1891–1932 ) ') was awarded a doctorate. In the same year he became a private lecturer in Modern Greek Philology in Thessaloniki , but lost this position under official pressure in 1971 and in 1974 became full professor at the same university for another nine years . From 1977 to 1984 he was also the only visiting professor on the chair for modern Greek studies 'Giorgos Seferis' at Harvard University.

As early as 1951, he began to publish scientifically and was also active as a journalist, mainly for the newspapers To Vima and Ta Nea . He made a name for himself through careful editions of modern Greek classics, such as Seferis , Karyotakis , Sikelianos and Valaoritis , but above all for the literary reception of Konstantinos Kavafis .
