Nikolaos P. Andriotis

Nikolaos P. Andriotis , completely Nikolaos Pantelis Andriotis ( Greek Νικόλαος Παντελής Ἀνδριώτης , born November 8, 1906 in Imbros ; † September 29, 1976 in Thessaloniki ), was a Greek linguist and neo-Graecist .

After attending high schools in Constantinople and Galați , Romania , Andriotis studied philology at the University of Athens from 1923 . From 1928 to 1944 he was editor of the "Historical Lexicon of the Greek Language" initiated by Georgios N. Chatzidakis ( Ιστορικό Λεξικό της Ελληνικής Γλώσσας ). After receiving his doctorate in 1932 from the University of Athens, he studied comparative linguistics from 1933 to 1937 at the universities of Vienna (with Paul Kretschmer ) and Berlin . From 1944 to 1969 he taught linguistics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki , where he was rector from 1962 to 1963. It was also Andriotis Chairman of the Foundation Manolis Triantaphyllides (Ίδρυμα Μανόλη Τριανταφυλλίδη), longtime member of the Society for Macedonian Studies (Εταιρεία Μακεδονικών Σπουδών), whose chairman he became in 1976, and chairman of the Foundation for Studies on the Balkan Peninsula (Ίδρυμα Mελετών Xερσονήσου του Aίμου) and member of the scientific advisory board of the journals Balkan Studies (1960–1974) and Ελληνικά ( Elliniká , 1966–1976).

The focus of research was the modern Greek lexicography , language history and dialectology as well as the Macedonian language . In the language question , he showed himself to be a representative of an adapted Dimotiki .
