Giovanni Alejandro Reyna (born November 13, 2002 in Sunderland , England ) is an American football player who also holds Portuguese nationality. The offensive midfielder is under contract with Borussia Dortmund and is a young American national player.

origin

His father Claudio is of Argentinian and Portuguese origin and was active as a professional footballer himself. The US international was under contract in Germany for Bayer 04 Leverkusen and VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga . Giovanni was born during his time at the English AFC Sunderland and named after the Dutch international Giovanni van Bronckhorst , who played with Reyna's father for the Glasgow Rangers from 1999 to 2001 . Reyna's mother Danielle Egan was also active as a soccer player and played for the US women's national team . His older brother Jack died of cancer .

Reyna, who grew up mainly in Bedford , New York after his father moved to the New York Red Bulls in early 2007 , played basketball at the AAU through 8th grade . Since the transfer of an underage player from outside the European Union or the European Economic Area is not permitted and is only possible from the age of 16 within this area, Reyna took on Portuguese citizenship in addition to his US citizenship before moving to Borussia Dortmund .

Career

society

Reyna was educated from the age of twelve at the youth academy of New York City FC , where his father Claudio was employed as a sports director. In 2017, at the age of 14, he won the Generation Adidas Cup with the club's U17s , a major league soccer tournament for youth teams, and was named the best player of the tournament.

In the summer of 2019 he moved to Germany to Borussia Dortmund , in whose A-youth he has been active since then and with whom he received a contract valid until June 2021. So he took a similar path as his compatriot Christian Pulisic , who also moved from the USA to Dortmund as a minor. Head coach Lucien Favre took him back to his home country at the age of 16 to the professional team's summer training camp, where he was used in friendly matches against the Seattle Sounders and Liverpool FC . In the A-Juniors Bundesliga , Reyna immediately established himself as a regular player. In the UEFA Youth League , the midfielder reached the play-offs with Dortmund's A-Jugend with three wins from four group games. At the same time, Reyna was in the Bundesliga for the first time on matchday 14 of the 2019/20 season . In January 2020 he was allowed to participate in the winter training camp of the first team in Marbella together with some teammates as well as Chris Führich and Steffen Tigges from the U23 . At the end of the winter preparation, Reyna was firmly integrated into the professional squad, whereby he should continue to play in the U19 when he is not used by the professionals. At the beginning of the second half of the season, he was the youngest American to date in the 5-3 away win against FC Augsburg by substitution for his Bundesliga premiere. In the first leg of the last sixteen against Paris Saint-Germain (2-1) in mid-February 2020, Reyna was then used in a European Cup match for the first time in the Westfalenstadion . At the end of the season there were 18 appearances for the runner-up, including one goal and two assists. In addition to a few games on the wing, the American was mainly used in the attacking midfield and was nominated for a starting eleven on the last two match days.

National team

Reyna has been working for US national youth teams since she was under 15. With the U15 he won the Torneo delle Nazioni , in which he was able to contribute four hits and assists. With the U17s , the midfielder took part as team captain at the 2019 World Cup in Brazil , where the team was eliminated from the bottom of the group.

Reyna could also play for the Portuguese Football Association because of his second citizenship, for the Argentinian because of his ancestry and for the English because of his birthplace . A change of association is possible up to a competitive match in an senior national team. At the end of February 2020, Reyna was appointed to the squad of the US national team by US national coach Gregg Berhalter for the test matches against the Netherlands and Wales that are due at the end of March . A little later he said that he would only play for the USA. The international matches were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
