The Glover-Pfeifhase ( Ochotona gloveri ) is a mammal from the family of the Pfeifhasen (Ochotonidae) within the hare-like (Lagomorpha). Their distribution area is in the People's Republic of China in the southwest of Qinghai , the northeast of Xizang , the northwest of Yunnan and the western Sichuan .

features

The Glover-Pfeifhase is a medium-sized Pfeifhase with a body length of 16 to 22 centimeters and a weight of 140 to 300 grams. In summer it has a teal to gray-brown, gray-reddish or reddish fur. The belly side and the top of the feet are gray-white, white or matt gray. The face is orange or pale brown from muzzle to forehead; in the subspecies O. g. brookei , the tip of the nose is orange-red and above the eyes there are light gray spots, in the subspecies O. g. gloveri , the throat is dark gray and the top of the snout is smoky yellow. The light chestnut brown to orange-colored ears reach a length of 31 to 39 millimeters and are thinly haired. In winter the back color is a little lighter, but otherwise corresponds to the summer color. The hind feet are 31 to 36 millimeters long.

The incisor and palate windows in the skull can be separate or fused in this type. Compared to the red-eared pika ( Ochotona erythrotis ), the snout region of the skull is narrower and somewhat longer and the tympanic membrane is somewhat smaller.

distribution

Distribution area of the Glover Pfeifhasen

The Glover Pika is endemic to the People's Republic of China . Its range includes the southwest of Qinghai , the northeast of Xizang , the northwest of Yunnan and western Sichuan . It thus takes up about the eastern third of the Tibetan highlands .

The altitude distribution of the animals is usually between 3500 and 4200 meters, but the species can also occur in Sichuan at altitudes of 1700 meters.

Way of life

The Glover Pika lives in rocky embankments and crevices, and also inhabits the adobe walls of buildings and temples. However, it does not occur on agriculturally used areas such as fields or pastures. It generally feeds on parts of plants and, like other species of the genus, builds haystacks.

Systematics

The Glover-Pfeifhase was assigned as an independent species to the Pfeifhasen (genus Ochotona ) and the subgenus Conothoa . At times the species was regarded as a subspecies of Ochotona erythrotis .

A total of three subspecies are distinguished, the nominate form O. g. gloveri and O. g. calloceps and O. g. brookei . According to molecular biological investigations, O. g. brookei represent its own species, which would then be juxtaposed as sister species Ochotona gloveri and Ochotona muliensis .

Hazard and protection

There is no information on population size or population trend, but the Glover Pika is classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) as not endangered (least concern) due to its large distribution area. In some regions the species is controlled as a pest.
