The Goethestrasse (also Johann-Wolfgang-von-Goethe-Strasse ; Italian Via Goethe ) is a street in the old town area of the South Tyrolean capital Bozen . It is named after Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , who was in Bolzano on his Italian trip in September 1786.

Goethestrasse has been attested since the 13th century and was originally called Schustergasse and then Predigergasse (after the nearby Dominican monastery). The northern section of the street and the southern end of the fruit square were also known as Hudergasse in the 15th century . In the district court order of Gries-Bozen from the year 1487 is used as the nether Schuestergasz competent head man in charge of the military contingent , a Hanns Seitz called.

In 1901 the street was renamed in memory of Goethe's stay in Bozen.

The street running in north-south direction takes its exit at the south end of the fruit square and leads to the Dominikanerplatz with the Dominican church there . The old connection to the Eisack Bridge was given via today's Kapuzinergasse , so that Goethestrasse was originally part of the supra-regional route towards Brenner or Trient and lined with several inns . Even today, the Roter Adler (also: Vögele ) is one of the most famous restaurants in Bolzano.

On the corner of Leonardo-da-Vinci-Straße, a stumbling block was laid in 2015 for the Holocaust victim Adolf Schwarz (1871–1944), who lived here .

Goethestrasse is part of Bozen's pedestrian zone .
