The graphics prize of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia was awarded in 2009 on the occasion of the year of graphics celebrated in Germany, Austria and Switzerland . The aim was to promote contemporary printmaking and to give it greater weight in cultural life. Originally, the prize was to be awarded annually.

The art prize , endowed only once and endowed with 5,000 euros each, was awarded to eight artists who had an art degree and exhibited at least two years, "... lived in North Rhine-Westphalia and were not older than 40 years". Artists who meet these criteria could submit designs that were examined by a jury . The award-winning works were published in a state edition and shown in an exhibition in the former imperial abbey of Aachen-Kornelimünster.

The award went to Christian Aberle ( Cologne ), Manuel Graf ( Düsseldorf ), Alexander Esters ( Neuss ), Jan Schmidt (Cologne), Gert & Uwe Tobias (Cologne), Maki Umehara (Düsseldorf), Simon Halfmeyer (Düsseldorf) and Robert Elfgen (Cologne).

The jury for 2009 was made up of: Tobias Burg ( Museum Folkwang , Essen ), Friederike van Duiven (artist), Maria Engels (head of the facility for art from NRW , Aachen- Kornelimünster ), Brigitte Franzen ( Ludwig-Forum, Aachen ), Stefan Gronert ( Kunstmuseum Bonn ), Renate Ulrich (State Chancellery NRW) and Jutta Schütt ( Städel Museum, Frankfurt ).

After the state elections in 2010 and the change of government to Hannelore Kraft , the prize was no longer awarded.
