Brigitte Franzen

Brigitte Franzen (* 1966 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is an art and cultural scientist and curator . From 2009 to 2015 she was director of the Ludwig Forum for International Art. Since 2015 she has been a board member of the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation , which is connected to 28 museums and institutions in the field of fine arts worldwide .

life and work

Franzen studied at the universities of Karlsruhe , Vienna and Marburg , the fan art history , European ethnology , German studies and sociology . She then taught at the Faculty of Architecture at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal and the Technical University of Graz . She held other teaching positions at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , the University of Cologne and the Ruhr University in Bochum . Since 1990 she has worked in exhibitions and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt am Main, the Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe and the Forum Stadtpark Graz.

From 2005 to 2008 Franzen worked as a curator for contemporary art at the Westphalian State Museum in Münster and founded the Sculpture Projects Archive in Münster right from the start. She curated the fourth edition of the Skulptur.Projekte -Münster, the international reference project for art in public space, in 2007 together with Kasper König and Carina Plath .

In 2009 Franzen moved to Aachen and became director of the Ludwig Forum for International Art . She resigned from her position in mid-2015 after she was appointed to the board of the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation .

Since 1993 Franzen has supervised numerous exhibition projects on art and architecture of the 20th and 21st centuries, including Stephen Willats (2008), Ergin Cavusoglu (2009), West Arch - A New Generation in Architecture (2010), Pawel Althamer (2011), Hyper Real - Art and America around 1970 (2011), Phyllida Barlow (2012), The City That Doesn't Exist (2012), Nancy Graves Project (2013), Children's Kingdom (2014), Le Souffleur. Schürmann meets Ludwig (2015), Mies van der Rohe (2016) and Michel Majerus (2017/18). In 2019 she is the curator of the Triennale for Small Sculptures in Fellbach. She describes her curatorial approach as “research-based curating”.

In 2018 she was awarded the Justus Beer Prize for curators of the Helga Pape Foundation together with Andreas Beitin and Holger Otten.

Franzen has u. a. with artists such as Nairy Baghramian , Lewis Baltz , Tania Bruguera , Jeremy Deller , Hans-Peter Feldmann , Dora García , Isa Genzken , Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster , Sofia Hultén , Thomas Kilpper , Suchan Kinoshita , Armin Linke , Deimantas Narkevičius , Martha Rosler , Wilhelm Schürmann , Thomas Schütte , Andreas Siekmann , Rosemarie Trockel , Joëlle Tuerlinckx , Silke Wagner , Clemens von Wedemeyer , Pae White , Haegue Yang and Tobias Zielony .

In addition, she has published numerous publications on contemporary art as an author and editor.
