goals and tasks

In the interests of the deceased couple, the main task of the foundation is the constant continuation of its international commitment. Therefore, even today, conscious attention is paid to the expansion of internationally established relationships on a cultural level. The purpose of the foundation is made possible through the acquisition and management of works of art and art objects. This includes the implementation of exhibitions or loans for exhibitions. These exhibitions are to be made accessible to the public. In addition, the purpose of the foundation is made possible by the granting of financial aid for the acquisition or maintenance of works of art or the support of exhibition projects. In the foreground is the goal of cooperation between all Ludwig museums, with which the basic idea of the Ludwigs can be guaranteed. Social relationships across national borders form an important cornerstone here. The promotion of multicultural dialogues forms a legacy to ensure the continuation of Peter and Irene Ludwig's commitment.

The foundation's governing bodies have the task analogous to the activities of Louis and its collection while free to make and adapt the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation in the future to guide and change in time.

Collection Ludwig

The Ludwigs' passion for collecting began in 1957. From that year onwards, the couple collected art objects, which from then on are also made available to the public. From the beginning, the aim of the collectors was to fill gaps in the collections of selected public museums. Museums at home and abroad benefited from this commitment. As early as 1957, the Suermondt Museum in Aachen and the Museum Schnütgen in Cologne received the first permanent loans of works of art from the Middle Ages.

The Ludwig Collection comprises several thousand objects and should be viewed from the start as a joint effort by the couple. The collection ranges from works of art from ancient Greece , the Middle Ages , the Baroque and Rococo periods to pre-Columbian art and the older and most recent art from China . It also includes contemporary art from both the US and the USSR and many other parts of the world. A particular highlight of the collection are the works of Pop Art and Pablo Picasso . But pottery , tile , porcelain , Islamic ceramics , furniture and arts and crafts form groups in the collection.

At the beginning of the 1960s, Peter and Irene Ludwig began to discover their interest in American and European art since the 1950s and, subsequently, for international contemporary art. The interest followed the commitment to this art, which was shown for the first time in 1968 in the exhibition "Zeitbild, Provokation, Kunst" in the Suermondt Museum Aachen. In 1969 a broad overview was organized at the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne, which for the first time comprehensively presented in particular the holdings of international Pop Art from the Ludwig Collection. The exhibition was visited by numerous people.

In 1970 the city of Aachen opened the Neue Galerie, which was given the addition of the Ludwig Collection. The institution has been called the Ludwig Forum for International Art since the move to new premises in 1991. In 1976 the Museum Ludwig was founded in Cologne . The foundation of the museum was preceded by the donation of around 300 works of art from Pop Art as well as art that was young at the time, for example by Georg Baselitz , Hanne Darboven , Nancy Graves , Donald Judd , Yves Klein , Sol LeWitt , Robert Morris , AR Penck , Gerhard Richter , Niki de Saint Phalle , Daniel Spoerri or Jean Tinguely . The works of artists such as Robert Rauschenberg , Andy Warhol , Roy Lichtenstein , Jasper Johns , James Rosenquist , Robert Indiana , Claes Oldenburg , Jim Dine , Tom Wesselmann and many others received great national and international attention. For Peter and Irene Ludwig , Pop Art was a mirror of their own time and for them represented the expression of a generation's attitude towards life.

The highlight of the collections is international art. This consists primarily of the collection of international contemporary art, the collection of works by Pablo Picasso from 1904 to 1972, of works by the Russian avant-garde from 1910 to around 1930 and of works from the then GDR , the former USSR and Eastern Europe as well as from China, Central and South America.
