The Grazer Eislaufverein (GEV) is the second oldest ice skating club in the Styrian capital Graz and is a full member of the Austrian Figure Skating Association .

The Graz ice skating club was founded in 1921 as the second Styrian ice skating club. Since that time, Styrian figure skating championships have been held, which at that time were held either on Hilnteich or on the outdoor area of ​​the state gym on natural ice. It became known Rudolf Zettelmann , the 1922 Styrian in consecutive order as GEV-runner to 1935 champion.

In 1932 the Styrian Ice Skating Association (STEV) was founded, the first president of which was the then chairman and founder of the Graz ice skating club Leo Scheu .

With the construction of the artificial ice rink in Liebenau in 1964, conditions were created for competitive sport in figure skating in Graz. International

Internationally, the club can participate in European Championships (1951 Staerck / Gareis, 1985 Paal, 2005 Brandstätter, 2007 Freudelsperger), World Cup participation (1951 Staerck / Gareis), participation in Junior World Championships (Schruf 1979, 1987 Head, 2001, 2005 Freudelsperger) and For the first time in Styria, Kathrin Freudelsperger also took part in the individual World Cup in 2007.

In the last two years 2008 and 2009, the GEV was able to provide Klaudia Ortner with a starter at the World Championships in Synchronized Skating .

In 2010 Stina Martini and Severin Kiefer were sent as Austrian junior champions to the 2010 Junior World Championships in The Hague, where they finished 20th.

In 2011 Stina and Severin were able to secure the Austrian title in the general class for the first time and thus qualify for the European Championships in Bern, where they reached 15th place. The two will also represent Austria's colors at the 2011 Junior World Championships in Korea in March 2011. In 2012 and 2013, the two competed at the European Championships in Sheffield (2012) and Zagreb (2013). In Zagreb they achieved their best placement with the 13th place. The two also represented Austria at two World Championships in Moscow in 2011 and in Nice in 2012.

In 2012 Barbora Silna and Juri Kurakin represented Austria in ice dancing at the European Championships in Sheffield.

Miriam Ziegler and Severin Kiefer were able to show themselves at various large competitions in the 2013/14 season - in December 2013 at the Universiade in Trento, where they took 5th place, and in January 2014 at the European Championships in Budapest (12th place) the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi (17th place in the short program) and the World Championships in March 2014 in Saitama.

National

In 1985, the Graz ice skating club, with Sabine Paal, was the first non-Viennese club to win an Austrian national championship among women after almost 100 years of national figure skating championships.

In honor of Leo Scheu, the Graz ice skating club has been organizing the "Leo Scheu Memorial Skating" since 1971. The classic Leo Scheu Laufen was one of four national association races organized by the Austrian Figure Skating Association every year. Up to the year 2006 the event was held a total of 34 times. After a one-year break, the Leo Scheu Memorial Skating was held internationally for the first time in 2008 with the support of the Austrian Ice Skating Association. Due to the change from a national to an international event, the name of the event was also changed to Icechallenge, Leo Scheu Memorial. In 2008 almost 150 athletes a. a. from Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Croatia, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria and Australia participated.

In 2009 the Icechallenge was added to the ISU calendar for the first time, which means that the World Standing Points important for the European, World and Olympic Games were awarded for the first time. With almost 360 participants from 34 countries, the Icechallenge was the only event worldwide on the ISU calendar in which all Olympic disciplines were held in a total of 7 age groups. With runners like the European champion Tomas Verner , the third in the world championships Stefan Lindemann , with class runners from Japan, the USA, Russia, Finland etc., the Icechallenge was one of the best-attended figure skating events worldwide after the Grand Prix. In the following years, the Icechallenge was held with top international runners. In 2013 the most famous runners to date could be welcomed to Graz. the two-time world champion (2007,2011) Miki Ando from Japan in the women and men vice world champion 2013 Denis Ten from Kazakhstan. Denis Ten won a bronze medal at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi.

International events

In 2010, together with the Austrian Figure Skating Association, the Graz Ice Skating Club held a Junior Grand Prix in Graz for the first time. The then women's winner Adelina Sotnikova from Russia has now won the gold medal at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi four years after the JGP Graz . The Russian pair skaters Ksenia Stolbova / Fedor Klimov were the winners of Graz and at the 2014 Olympic Games they both won the silver medal.

The Graz Ice Skating Club, the Styrian Ice Skating Association and the Austrian Figure Skating Association applied in March 2011 with Graz as the venue for the 2011 World Figure Skating Championship, which was canceled in Japan due to the devastating earthquake .
