Tomáš Verner (born June 3, 1986 in Písek , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech figure skater who starts in a single run . He is the European champion of 2008 .

biography

Verner started figure skating at the age of five. He has an older brother, Miroslav, who competed in junior pair skating at international level, and a younger sister, Kateřina. In addition to his mother tongue, he speaks German, English and some Russian. At the age of twelve he moved from his hometown Pisek to Prague to train with Vlasta Kopřivová .

In 2002 Verner became Czech champion for the first time and played his first European championship , in which he finished 14th and his first world championship , in which he missed the qualification for the freestyle and was 26th. Verner trained in the "Hasa Hall" in Prague and in the "Ice-Dome" in Oberstdorf during the high season and also in Leppävirta in Finland during the summer . In addition to Kopřivová, he was also trained by Michael Huth . His choreographers at that time were Lori Nichol and Rostislaw Sinitsyn . For the next four years, Verner couldn't improve significantly. In 2006 he played his first Olympic Games in Turin and finished them in 18th place.

The year 2007 suddenly brought Verner's breakthrough. For the first time ever, he achieved a single-digit placement at a European Championship and a World Championship. At the European Championships in Warsaw , he immediately became vice European champion behind Brian Joubert . He even won the short program. At the World Championships in Tokyo , Verner confirmed his performance by reaching fourth place. He showed a four-way toe- loop-triple-toe-loop combination and another four-way toe-loop.

In 2008, the now six-time Czech champion Verner became European champion in Zagreb . The last time a Czech won this title was Petr Barna 16 years earlier . At the World Championships he was on a promising fourth place after the short program, but fell to 15th place with a disastrous freestyle, the 20th of the competition.

In December 2008 Verner was able to qualify for the Grand Prix final for the first time . There he took fourth place. At the European Championships in 2009 he achieved a personal best in the short program, but made several mistakes in the freestyle, which threw him back from second to sixth place in the overall standings. At the World Championships in Los Angeles , like two years earlier, he was fourth.

In the 2009/10 season, Verner suffered from the H1N1 virus , from which he was unable to recover properly for the entire season. He later criticized his coaches for letting him start at all. At the Czech championships he had to let Michal Březina go first. Verner was sixth in the Grand Prix final, tenth in the European Championship and only finished 19th in his second Olympic Games in Vancouver . Thereupon he decided not to participate in the world championship . There his compatriot Březina was fourth.

Verner graduated from Charles University in Prague with a degree in sports in 2010 .

Before the start of the 2010/11 season, Verner changed his coach and went to Robert Emerson in Richmond Hill , near Toronto . Verner noticed that the new North American training methods meant a big change for him, as he was not used to training complete runs of the program from Europe, but only to do this two or three times before the respective tournaments. In addition to his coaches, Verner also changed his choreographers. Pasquale Camerlengo is now responsible for its programs. With the victory at the Cup of Russia , with a personal best in the freestyle, Verner was able to win the first Grand Prix competition of his career. This earned him qualification for the Grand Prix final , in which he finished fifth. A little later he won the Czech championship in front of an injured Michal Březina. At the European Championships 2011 in Bern , Verner reached the podium again after three years. He won the bronze medal behind the French Florent Amodio and Brian Joubert . At the World Cup in Moscow Verner could not confirm his upward trend and only reached twelfth place.

In autumn 2011, Verner was unable to take part in the Grand Prix series due to back problems . At the Czech championships, however, he managed to keep Michal Březina behind him and thus secure his eighth national title. The European championship he finished in fifth place, at the world championship he could not call up his performance possibilities at any time and took 16th place.

The 2012/13 season was disastrous for Verner. In his two Grand Prix competitions, he did not get past last place. At the European Championships , he finished eleventh and at the World Championships, 21st place. In the World Championship freestyle, he managed almost no jumping element as planned.
