Urmanov, who was born in Leningrad, started figure skating at the age of four. His trainer was Alexei Mishin . In 1990 he became Vice Junior World Champion. In 1991, at the age of 17, he was the first to successfully land a four-fold jump at a European championship . At his first Olympic Games in 1992 , he finished fifth. In the same year he won his first medal at a European championship with bronze behind Petr Barna and Wiktor Petrenko . The following year he also won bronze at the World Championships behind Canadians Kurt Browning and Elvis Stojko . It should be his only medal at world championships.

His greatest success was the surprising win of the gold medal in figure skating at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer . After that, by winning the European Championship in 1997, he was only able to win one title at a major tournament. An injury prevented participation in the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano . He then switched to the professionals and won the 1999 world title there.

Urmanow currently works as a trainer and trains among others the Russian champion 2008 and vice junior world champion 2006 Sergei Voronow . He is also an ISU official. In 2004 he married Viktoria Urmanowa and has three children.
