Location of Greuel in Bergisch Gladbach

Greuel is a district in the Sand district of Bergisch Gladbach .

history

Greuel is a late medieval settlement that was mentioned in a document as early as 1582. For the year 1700, a variant has been identified as Grewell . By 1905, the farmyard at Greuel developed into a larger hamlet with 15 residential buildings and 90 residents. It is difficult to provide an explanation for the origin of the settlement name. There are two options:

  1. Abomination could have originated from "Geräuhel" (= confusion of dwarfs), which comes from the Middle High German "geriuhe" (= wilderness).
  2. The Middle High German “gruo” (= green / green meadow) could also be hidden behind the field name Greuel .
