Signe Byrge Sørensen (born March 6, 1970 in Maribo ) is a Danish director and producer of documentaries, mostly about developing countries.

Life

Sørensen finished high school at Maribo Gymnasium, where she made her first documentaries with classmates. After graduating from high school, she went to Zimbabwe with the Red Cross to plant trees there, and then hitchhiked through southern Africa, especially Zimbabwe and Botswana . When she returned to Denmark, she gave lectures on her travels. She attended a video course at the Kolding Adult Education Center . There she made a collaborative documentary about two fishermen fighting against the construction of a bridge. She studied Internationale Udviklingsstudier og Communication at Roskilde University , where she graduated in 1998 after an Erasmus year in Manchester and an internship in India . She wrote her thesis on the democratization of the media in South Africa after the end of apartheid . During her studies she worked for ZEBRA Network , which was an international network for films and media about developing countries, and arranged for her to stay in Lok Jumbish , Rajasthan , India. There she organized video workshops with two local filmmakers. The Danish division of ZEBRA Network was led by SPOR Media , a production company run by Helle Toft Jensen and Torben Vosbein. Sørensen worked there in various fields after graduating. Her first production came about because the actual producer changed jobs and she produced the documentary On-line med forfædrene in his place in Zimbabwe . Then she made other documentaries, e.g. B. on bullying , and trained at the film school Den Danske Filmskole in Copenhagen .

In 2004 she moved to Final Cut Productions ApS , where she also produced documentaries. However, in 2008 the company closed while Sørensen was in the process of doing The Act of Killing . In order to complete various projects that have already started, she founded Final Cut for Real together with Anne Köhncke . In 2012, The Act of Killing was released and won several awards. In 2014, she and Joshua Oppenheimer were nominated for an Oscar in the Best Documentary Film category.

At the 2016 Academy Awards , she and Oppenheimer were again nominated for an Oscar in the Best Documentary Film category for their work on the film The Look of Silence .
