The Gudenå [ ˈguːʔðənoːʔ ] in Jutland is the longest river in Denmark with a length of 158 km . The Gudenå rises 65 m above sea level in the Tinnet Krat forest between the towns of Tørring and Thyregod and flows east of Randers into the Randers Fjord.
The river reaches the town of Randers after 149 km; If the Randers Fjord is included in the run, it measures 176 km.
The catchment area is 2,643 sq km slightly larger than the Saarland . The mean discharge of 32.4 m³ / s is slightly lower than that of the North Sea tributary Skjern Å , which rises two kilometers east-northeast in the Tinnet Krat nature reserve .
On its way, the Gudenå passes the towns of Ry , Silkeborg , Bjerringbro and Langå , where the Hadsten Lilleå flows into.
It was formed about 15,000 years ago during the last ice age . It houses valuable fauna and flora and is therefore under landscape protection. Since prehistoric times it has had great historical and economic importance for the inhabitants of Jutland, both as a means of traffic and transport and for generating energy from hydropower .
Due to its scenic location, it is now a popular destination for those looking for relaxation from home and abroad, especially in the summer months. In addition to fishing (e.g. salmon, sea trout), canoeing tours are particularly popular.
The bank areas are very different, from tall trees and shallow beaches to thick grass and rushes. The upper part of the Gudenå is very densely overgrown and has a strong current. In the Silkeborg area, the Gudenå flows through a widely ramified lake district, on the banks of which some of the highest peaks in Denmark such as the 147 m high Himmelbjerget lie. In the estuary near Randers , the river finally passes the renatured wetland of Vorup Enge .
