Guri Melby (born February 3, 1981 in Orkdal ) is a Norwegian linguist and politician of the social-liberal party Venstre . She has been the education and integration minister in her country since March 2020.

Life

After graduating from high school in 2000, she began studying Nordic languages at the Technical and Natural Sciences University of Norway (NTNU). In 2007 she obtained her master’s degree. She then started working as a teacher, from 2008 to 2011 she was a lecturer at Sør-Trøndelags University , which is now also part of NTNU. Between 2009 and 2011 she also worked as a consultant for the national center for writing research and didactics. She then worked as an advisor to the Ministry of Education until 2012. In 2012 she accepted a position at Oslo and Akershus University of Applied Sciences . Melby chaired the Norwegian Language Council ( Språkrådet ) from 2016 to 2018 .

Local politician

Between 1999 and 2007 Melby was a member of the local parliament of her home town Orkdal and then until 2011 in the Trondheim City Council . Within the party, she has been represented on the board of Venstre since 2010. Melby was a member of the Oslo city ​​government from 2013 to 2015 , so-called Byråd . She was responsible for the environment and traffic. In 2015 she moved to the Oslo City Council.

Storting MP and Minister

In the parliamentary elections in 2013 and 2017 , she missed the direct move into Storting and became Vararepresentantin for the constituency of Oslo, i.e. a substitute member. As such, it came into action on January 17, 2018, as the Oslo party colleague Trine Skei Grande became a member of the government and as such had to suspend her mandate. Melby became a member of Parliament's Education and Research Committee. On March 13, 2020, she was introduced as the new Minister of Education and Integration. It therefore belongs to the Solberg government . The post had become vacant after Grande announced her resignation from her ministerial office.

On August 23, 2020, her party's electoral committee proposed her as the new Venstre chair. A state party congress must confirm her in this position.

Positions

When the Chinese politician Li Zhanshu visited Storting in May 2019, Melby and Petter Eide from Sosialistisk Venstreparti (SV) demonstrated by wearing T-shirts that had "Freedom" printed on both Norwegian and Mandarin . She was then denied access to the parliament building. In October she announced that she had nominated Hong Kong citizens for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize because of their struggle for freedom of expression and democracy .
